Quantum technologies land at the MWC2022

The European Quantum Space hosted by the Quantum Flagship showcased the recent advances in quantum technologies and their evolution into tangible products and services for the telecommunications market at the biggest mobile conference worldwide.

From February 28th to March 3rd, the Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC) hosted The European Quantum Space, dedicated to showcasing the innovation and development in Quantum Technologies that Europe is driving forward. The space exhibited the latest achievements and advances in the field of quantum technologies for three main areas: The Quantum Flagship, Regional Initiatives and Start-ups/Companies, all mainly focusing on quantum communication and computing, of interest to the telecommunication audience, core to the mobile ecosystem that the MWC brings together.

Throughout four intense days and with an overall estimated attendance of almost 70.000 people to the entire event, many attendees approached the stand, aware of the emergence of quantum technologies and the new wave of applications shaping the future of our society. Moreover, many graduate and master students approached the stand, curious about career development and job opportunities within the field.

The stand also received a variety of institutional visits: representatives of the Generalitat de Catalunya Agency for Business Competitiveness; the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland, representatives of the Delegation of Alberta, Canada; representatives of the American Consulate in Barcelona; and Commercial Advisors of the Denmark Delegation of the European Commission, among others.

Representation of the QuantumCAT ecosystem

Researchers Hugues de Riedmatten (ICFO Group Leader), Xavier Jordán (Innovation Management Office at i2Cat), Valerio Pruneri (ICFO Group Leader), Antonio Acín (ICFO Group Leader), Álvaro Cuevas (postdoctoral researcher at ICFO) and Jordi Pérez Guijarro (PhD student at the UPC) represented the quantum communication research. The quantum sensing applications were represented by Gianvito Lucivero (postdoctoral researcher at ICFO) while Artur García-Saéz (BSC researcher) represented the projects in quantum computing. Finally, Bruno JuliáDíaz (Professor at the University of Barcelona) and Maciej Lewenstein (ICFO Group Leader) represented the quantum simulation field.

Three start-up companies, partners of the QuantumCAT initiative, were also present at the stand. Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, LuxQuanta and Quside had a dedicated booth to showcase their latest products and technologies and meet and connect with other assistants.

Debating the present and future of Quantum Technologies

On Tuesday, Valerio Pruneri, group leader at ICFO, and Vanesa Díaz, Business Developer Manager of LuxQuanta, participated in the panel “Prospects of Quantum Computing and Cybersecurity”, together with BSC Associated Director Pep Martorell and ICFO Director Lluís Torner. The session was organized by the Mobile World Capital and moderated by Oscar Pallarols from Cellnex.

In the afternoon, Vanesa Díaz also participated in the panel “Quantum Technologies“, organized in the frame of the Frontier Technologies program. Díaz, together with Oxford Quantum Circuits CEO Ilana Wisby and Enrique Lizaso, founder and managing partner at Multiverse Computing, discussed the current state and future perspectives of quantum technologies.

On Thursday, Quside co-founder and CEO Carlos Abellán joined the session “What is the game plan for quantum computing?” that delved into the tangible benefits of quantum computing and the unprecedented disruption it will usher in across multiple sectors.
