Quantum Communication

Quantum communication technologies for a secure digital society and future quantum internet compatible with existing infrastructures.

Description

Quantum communication allows the transmission of quantum states between remote parties.  This project will address several aspects of quantum communication. The first task will address the quantum communication bit rate over short distances, by developing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems using coherent states of light (continuous variable QKD). The second task will develop the quantum technologies for future quantum repeater architectures that will enable quantum communication tackle longer distances than currently possible. Finally, the third task will study theoretically relevant problems in quantum Shannon theory.

Objectives

This project aims to overcome the main limitations present in current quantum communication and quantum key distribution implementations, namely: bit rate, cost, security, maximum distance, as well in the research techniques for optimal coding addressing fundamental limits. Our vision is that quantum security will become a key ingredient to protect private information in the years to come. The project aims to make this happen in Catalonia by:

  • The construction and implementation of stronger and faster cryptographic protocols.
  • Demonstrate the operability of quantum memories in real environments for long-distance quantum communication.
  • Improve the theoretical tools to achieve such general objective.
